...♪♫... Name: Edward Friedrich Alias: E // Echo Age: 14 Gender: Male Sexuality: Asexual as far as he's concerned. Habit/Neurosis: When particularly stressed or simply needs to think, E finds his time best spent at the piano. He keeps several strings of piano wire on hand at all times, and enjoys wrapping them around his fingers and wrists when in deep thought. (For this reason, he sometimes is seen wearing gloves; monofilament wire is incredibly durable and with enough strength can cut human skin pretty easily. He hides the unfortunate nicks and cuts from vigorous use with these gloves.) Personality: E is, primarily, a creature of pride. His impressive intellect was fostered as a child from the very first days he was able to fully appreciate his surroundings - and he's had self-confidence bred into him, but doesn't possess a superiority complex and can be humble unless provoked or insulted. Even so, he is well aware of his strengths (and weaknesses) and can become defensive if either is put into question or exploited, respectively. He's incredibly blunt and to the point, regardless if doing so results in hurt. He is remarkably trustworthy and loyal to those he deems worthy of his respect - that is, if someone bothers trying to befriend him due to what some feel is an abrasive personality. They're often off-put by his foul mouth and no-nonsense way of approaching things. Beneath these traits, however, are some redeeming qualities - he is an englishman at heart and strongly believes in being a gentleman. He feels strongly for justice and doing right, perhaps to a fault - he's gotten himself in more than one precarious situation defending what he believes is justified. He's almost impossible to scare or intimidate, and has adopted the bad habit of smoking as of last year. |
♪ E was born in a small town on the outskirts of England, to two middle-class citizens of no particular noteworthy standing. His mother was a librarian, his father a teacher at a nearby university; both prized his education above all else and did their best to enroll him into a private school, fostering his intellect with all they had in them. However, the funds required to keep their son in school soon became a burden the family couldn't handle; E's father was soon up to his neck in debt, and made a deal with a rather unsavory sort of gentleman in order to procure the necessary money to ensure his son's future. Two months later, his mother was murdered on her way home from work. She'd been brutally raped and dismembered, her body mutilated beyond recognition. She would've never been identified if her attackers hadn't left her I.D. two blocks away from the crime scene in their hasty retreat. E was devastated; he'd lost his mother at the tender age of eight, and the loss was incredibly bitter -- yet, it wasn't the only loss he'd face that year. Five months after that, his father committed suicide, leaving behind a note which detailed his transactions with a crime syndicate who had used his wife's life as incentive to pay back his debts to them. E was orphaned and homeless, with no relatives to speak of, his world left in ruins. It became quickly apparent that the events that had labeled him an orphan had a strong impact on shaping the boy's life. He was reserved, refusing to talk or open up to anyone - that was, until his first 'break.' A six year old girl was being bullied by two boys, both age ten. They'd spit in her hair and pushed her into the dirt, holding her face down into a puddle of mud and watching as she squirmed and wriggled, spluttering and crying in protest. And all because she'd tripped over one of the boy's feet earlier in the afternoon. E broke out of his shell; he pummeled one boy with a rock until his face was a mass of black and blue and red, so red. The girl had run off, screaming, as the other's accomplice grabbed E off of his friend and pounded him with fists much larger than E's own. After losing his weapon and vastly outweighed, he had no chance in defending himself; it was the first time he'd ever been thrashed, and it was a hard lesson, the first of many he'd learn the hard way. One day later he was shuttled off to another orphanage, once more the silent and unmovable recluse - until again, he saw with his own eyes the cruelty of humanity unfold before him. He couldn't sit by and do nothing - he couldn't allow that wrongness to persevere. If he did, he'd be no better than his father in his mind. And that was worse than any beating, any consequence, by far. The cycle went on; E was sent away each time he violently responded to perceived injustices, 'protecting' those weaker than him or those wronged by others. By twelve, he'd become seen as little more than a lost cause. No family wanted the problematic mute prone to violence. By thirteen he'd been transferred to his last and final stay before being inducted into the ranks of Wammy's House. The orphanage was relatively small, with only eight other occupants including himself, run down far beyond repair and signs of abandonment apparent at every turn. Yet, E didn't mind. There was a piano. He immersed himself in learning the craft, honing his skills every day, regardless the sad condition of the instrument long passed it's glory days. It'd been out of tune and in disrepair when E arrived; by the date of his fourteenth birthday, it was playing beautifully. Perhaps it was through his quick mastery and artful skill with the instrument that earned him the interest of Wammy's House - whatever the reason, E had finally been discovered, and intended to take the opportunity to prove himself the only way he knew how - with his own two hands. He would become L, and his justice would change the world. |
